Interview with Howard F. Lyman, director of the "Eating With Conscience Campaign" of the Humane Society of the United States
Mr. Lyman is a fourth-generation
family farmer with over 35 years
of personal experience. His
farming experience includes:
working in a large organic dairy
farm, owning a large factory
feedlot, raising chickens, pigs
and turkeys, farming thousands
of acres of grain; and raising a
herd of over one thousand
commercial beef cows.
His story begins in 1979 when he became paralyzed from the waist down due to a tumor on his spinal cord. The doctors predicted, that since the tumor was located inside his spinal cord, an operation would give him one chance in a million of ever walking again. He made a promise to himself the night before the operation that no matter what the outcome of the surgery, he would dedicate the remainder of his life to doing what he believed was right. After a 12 hour operation, the doctors removed the tumor. He made a successful recovery and a few days later, walked out of the hospital. It was this experience which changed his life. He believes that the reason he is able to walk today is that God has a mission for him to accomplish. After this experience, Mr. Lyman reflected on how, following all the modern advice, he had converted his small organic family farm into a large corporate chemical farm. He had witnessed his organic soil change from a living productive base to a sterile, chemically saturated plot as a result of the so-called modern methods of farming. He also began to perceive the inhumane way animals are raised in factory feedlots. So he decided to re-educate himself on the effects of chemical farming. After much reading and studying, in 1983 he sold his farm and began working with other farmers who were in financial trouble; this lead to a position with the Montana Farmers Union. In 1987, Mr. Lyman moved to Washington, DC, to serve as a lobbyist for the National Farmers Union. He spent five years in politics on Capital Hill and had some small successes such as the enacting of the National Organic Standards Act, but realized that much more was required. He became convinced that the needed changes had to come from the producers and consumers at the grassroots level. Commenting on the root cause of our health and environmental problems, Mr. Lyman said, "Whether it's the loss of the rain forests, world hunger, loss of top soil or our own health, they are all part of a wheel and the fork with which we eat is the axle. Our fork is the most dangerous weapon in the arsenal of Homo sapiens. We're digging more graves more with our forks than with any other tool." In 1992, Mr. Lyman, as the Executive Director of the "International Beyond Beef Campaign" organized a massive public education campaign. More than 10,000 people distributed over 1,000,000 pieces of information in one day at over 3,000 separate locations around the world. The objective was to educate consumers about their food choices and the benefits of a vegetarian diet. He went on to become the Director of the "Eating With Conscience Campaign" for the Humane Society of the United States and the President of the International Vegetarian Union. In these roles, during the past five years, he traveled more than 200,000 miles annually and in 1996 alone, spoke on over 4,000 radio stations and 300 television stations, and gave over 1000 interviews. He has spoken to thousands of groups ranging in size from small audiences to an assembly exceeding 25,000 people at the Earth Day Celebration in Oakland, California. |
He talks to people about changing their diet from an animal base to a vegetable one, emphasizing that they can live longer and healthier by eating with conscience. He encourages everyone to ask: Who produced my food? What did they use on it? What is it doing to me, the environment and the animals? He commented, "My life is dedicated to sharing the belief that each one of us can make the world a better place and if there is to be a bright future for our children and grandchildren, it will come from consumer support of producers who work in concert with nature -- organically, sustainably and humanely." When asked about Mad Cow disease, Mr. Lyman said that it is believed to be caused by an abnormal protein called a prion that was first recognized in Britain in 1986. He reported that this protein can survive 340 degrees centigrade; has no DNA or RNA; can be buried in the soil and still be infectious. Furthermore, if it is placed in the strongest disinfectant, it will survive for five years and emerge more vigorous than when it went in. Prions are thought to multiply by setting off chain reactions in the brain that damage healthy cellular proteins, thereby converting normal proteins into abnormal ones. The disease is believed to be transmitted by the cost-saving practice of recycling the remains of slaughtered animals into a protein residue and feeding it to cows. Because some of the slaughtered animals are diseased, the agent that causes the disease, which is not easily detected or destroyed, can end up in animal feed. Mr. Lyman said that the estimated number of human cases of the equivalent form of the disease in England is about 100 and that in a few years that number could increase from 5000 to over 1 million. He went on to say that even though the US government claims that there are no confirmed cases in the US, he believes there are indicators to question the veracity of this statement. Mr. Lyman noted that half of all Americans are dying today from heart disease and the main contributing factor is saturated fat, obtained mostly from animal products; and cholesterol, which only comes from animal products. One of every three Americans today will acquire cancer and one of four will die from it. Of all the carcinogens and toxins that go into the human body, 75% are from animal products while only 16% are from vegetable products. He explained that 91% of all carcinogens and toxins that cause cancer can be removed by doing two things: removing animal products from the diet and eating organic vegetables. He went on to say, "The thing that I am most proud of today is that no animal has to die for me to live a long, healthy and productive life. If I have the ability to live without the need for any animal to die, then why put my hands in the blood of another living being who has feelings just like humans and enjoys life probably as much as I do. This is a win-win situation. I live longer by not eating them, they live longer by me not eating them, and everyone who picks up their fork should be concerned with this situation."¡¹ |

Through years of practice, I
have gradually come to realize
that Master is not only a great
spiritual leader, but also a
great teacher of science. Since
Master mentioned the scientist
Nikola Tesla (1856-1943)1
several times, I started to
collect material about him. I
have found that he made many
discoveries and invented such
things as the alternating
current (AC) generator, the
polyphase system, the
alternating current motor, radio
communications, a remote
controlled submarine, a wireless
light bulb, wireless power
transmission, the terrestrial
resonance at 8HZ, an engine
without pistons or leaf-shaped
blades, alternative energy
sources, et cetera. It surprised
me that many physics and
engineering professors either do
not know of him or do not
recognize those ideas of his
that are worth further research.
Master, however, knows.
Tesla, like his elder brother, who died at an early age, experienced Light ever since he was a child. He could see strong flashes of Light and images in front of his eyes. Certainly, this was not his imagination. If someone said a word to him, the object that the word represented would appear vividly in front of him. Sometimes he couldn't tell if there was an actual object there. The image would still be there even if he stretched out his arms.2 Tesla started his spiritual journey when he was young. He experienced worlds beyond the comprehension of people in this world. He saw new places, cities and countries. These images were very vivid in his mind. He imagined himself living in a country that he had never seen and made good friends with the local people, who were very friendly to him and looked very real.3 Occurrences like this happened until he was seventeen. After that, he concentrated all his thoughts on inventing. He was delighted to find that he had an amazing ability to imagine things. He needed no models or experiments, yet he could imagine them vividly in his mind. For example, before he invented the alternating current motor, he felt the existence of such a thing, although he could not yet comprehend it. While he was reciting poems with his friends in a park one day, he suddenly felt the image of the entire construction of the motor. He then drew a blueprint of the structure of the motor on the ground with a stick. This supports what Master has said: "There are many things we have learned before." Maybe Tesla had seen such things when he was in a higher world. Subsequently, when he came to this world and could not find them, he used his knowledge and the scientific knowledge obtained from his research to create them. When Tesla faced dangerous or unfavorable situations, or when he was jubilant, he often saw unexplainable flashes of Light. Sometimes he saw flames burst out in the air around him. The lights became stronger and stronger every year and peaked when he was twenty-five years old. He described the following when he was sixty: "These luminous phenomena still manifest themselves from time to time, as when a new idea opening up possibilities strikes me. But they are no longer exciting, being of relatively low intensity. When I close my eyes, I invariably observe first, a background of very dark and uniform blue, not unlike the sky on a clear but starless night. In a few seconds this field becomes animated with innumerable scintillating flakes of green, arranged in several layers and advancing towards me. Then there appears, to the right, a beautiful pattern of two systems of parallel and closely spaced lines, at right angles to one another, in all sorts of colors with yellow-green and gold predominating. Immediately thereafter the lines grow brighter and the whole is thickly sprinkled with dots of twinkling light. This picture moves slowly across the field of vision and in about ten seconds vanishes to the left, leaving behind a ground of rather unpleasant and inert grey which quickly gives way to a billowy sea of clouds, seemingly trying to mould themselves in living shapes. It is curious that I cannot project a form into this grey until the second phase is reached. Every-time, before falling asleep, images of persons or objects flit before my view. When I see them I know that I am about to lose consciousness. If they are absent and refuse to come, it means a sleepless night." Tesla was eager to search for more convenient, more attractive science and technologies without concern for whether the new discoveries would impact upon the profits resulting from previous discoveries. For example the alternating current used now was hindered by adherents of the direct-current system. At the time when the obstacles were cleared, the alternating current equipment and power lines were all set up and investors started to make profits from them, Tesla began publishing his views on how to transmit power without wires to every corner of the world in order to benefit more people. Regardless of the feasibility of such theories, his spirit was rare and valuable. When he designed a light bulb, he would not accept a small defect, which was intended to let the bulb burn out after a certain amount of usage so that the manufacturer could continue to sell bulbs to make more profits. Similarly, the engine he designed was also environmentally friendly and durable. |
Tesla also believed deeply in the existence of extraterrestrial (especially Martian) life forms. He hoped that he could communicate with them, and even transmit power between planets. In 1889, aiming to realize his goal of a worldwide communication network and power transmission, Tesla set up a laboratory at Colorado Springs, Colorado to research and develop a magnifying transmitter, the machine needed for his plan. His intention was to use the machine to power the Earth and create an extra-low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic stationary wave between the Earth and the ionosphere, in order to transmit power. The machine could also be used to create and guide high frequency current to the atmosphere to artificially create auroras to light up whole city without street lights, et cetera. After spending eight months studying and some time on preparation, Tesla and others built an experimental tower at Long Island, New York and installed the magnifying transmitter on the tower. Unfortunately, because his radio patent was stolen and investors lost confidence, et cetera, they could not get enough capital to finish their plan. Finally they had to dismantle the tower and sell it in order to pay off their debts. Tesla announced many of his creative scientific ideas. However, unless the research was finished, he wouldn't announce the details. In addition, he had his unique way of thinking imaginatively. Consequently, the new energy sources and other creative ideas he discovered in his later years could not be understood easily by just studying the relevant documents or his 1889 experimental diary, which is still in existence. There are two kinds of researchers nowadays who study Tesla's findings. The first concept, released by Corum Associate in 1984, uses electromagnetic transmission line theory to explain the operational principles of the magnifying transmitter. In 1994, Richard Hull and his partner published a book4 according to their experience of re-creating and operating the magnifying transmitter to explain Tesla's experimental diary and to verify Corum's theory. From their study, we know that if the machine were big enough, it could create an effect similar to lightning, and it also could be used to transmit high voltage power efficiently. But regarding powering the Earth electromagnetically without affecting its environment, there is still no satisfactory conclusion. The second kind of researcher thinks that modern scientific theories have shortcomings, and consequently, we ignore and cannot explain the cosmic energy distributed around us. Actually such energy is inexhaustible. If only we could get the right combination of necessary components, closely related to cosmic power, and make their electrical or mechanical frequency the same as, or in proportion to that of cosmic energy, we could induce a resonance to obtain cosmic energy. But because of the hindrance of the so-called "underground government" relevant equipment cannot be distributed and quantitative theoretical studies cannot be conducted widely.5 In any event, in the future, the use of new energy will support Master's foresight in 1992: "...... In the higher worlds they don't need oil like we do. ..... They use different kinds of energy, not necessarily the sun's energy. We have other kinds of energy which are in the atmosphere. I think some scientists have begun to find out, but have not put it to use. ....."6¡¹ |
