Loving Signature Activities

Report by Fellow Initiates in Formosa

Love Without Boundaries

In the whole process of the signature campaign, we have discovered that the world is still very lovely. There are still many compassionate people. A lot of people had signed their names without hesitation; their love is not just limited to their families or compatriots, but extends and expands to the whole world. Some of them had not only signed their names, but also spread the news to their school mates, colleagues and friends; some even handed out their loudspeakers to help us in broadcasting and interviewing. Some seemingly impossible things also became possible.
The policemen who normally did not allow the "nomadic" hawkers or peddlers to set up their stalls at the junctions of lanes and streets, allowed us to set up at these places. Those so-called "people of authority" in the community - whom nobody had dared to infringe into their crowded shop-fronts - not only allowed us to set up at their places, but also rendered a lot of assistance to us. In schools, the stern-looking instructors - who forbade students to do various things - not only allowed us to spread the news in the schools, but also helped us to broadcast in schools to let the teachers and students know about what's happening. In emporiums and shopping centers, the managers - who normally did not allow stalls to be set up at the corridors without official permission - had given us a free hand and much convenience. Many of the so-called "notorious elements" had also shown their pure sentiments.
Only when we are extending our love will we be able to feel deeply the boundless love of Master. This is the most beautiful and wonderful moment of all. Love is selfless; has no discrimination between you and me, good or bad; is without any limitation or constraint of constitutions and laws; it is without the constraint of unnecessary social habits and cultures as we are the lovely children of God Almighty.

The Reappearance Of Inherited Good Customs

Waves of people signed their names - from old to young ones; their supportive and warm-hearted sentiments displayed the great love of the Formosa people at large. It was a re-appearance of the compassion, love and humanity that is prevalent in most Chinese people. As one of the brother initiate said, "This activity of the Master's is not only to salvage the lives of the Au Lac refugees, but also to awaken the long-sleeping conscience of the world and develop the already inborn love."
Life Becomes Extraordinary
With Love

The seeds of love had been spread and planted through this activity. Everyone, who had signed his name, had beaming smiles on his face. That is the precious sentiments of humanity. Some people may look unsure but after signing their names, they will start to realize they possess - at least - the loving-kindness and concern about other people around them. The whole activity is full of love and togetherness. The participants of this activity and the signature supporters, based on the ground of humanitarianism and the spirit of "all are one", contributed whole-heartedly towards this refugee matter. Through this activity, the initiates were given an opportunity to practise and develop their loving-kindness

At one of the commercial school garden parties, we mixed around with the crowd to ask for signatures. The flow of crowd was really overwhelming. The loving signature campaign had earnest responses.
Suddenly, one person asked me before he signed, "Do you come from beyond time and space?" I smiled and did not answer. He repeated the question each time after writing each word and stared at me, "Do you come from beyond time and space?" After he had signed his name, he smiled at me confidently and said, "I am sure that you must have come from beyond time and space."

Volunteer With Love

A girl, who heard of the "Love signature" campaign, immediately approached us and said, "My mum told me that a human being must have love for others. I want to sign. "Then, she shouted to her classmates, "Hello! All of you must have love for others! Please, come and sign!" This little dharma protector really did a good job; and she imitated me as a volunteer and asked people for their signatures. Later, she came and asked me, "Am I doing a good job as a loving volunteer?" I encouraged her and said, "Well done, you are really a good, loving volunteer!"

Self Breakthrough

Originally, I was quite self-constrained. For the first two days, I locked myself up. Later on, I didn't care about face, emotion ... etc. All these were thrown to one side and I broke through all the psychological barriers. After that, I could do things happily and enthusiastically.
In the campaign, we encountered many situations, including cold responses, eager responses, etc. Everyone had to learn to tackle these situations on the spot. Some people had been invited several times, but still refused to sign. Some signed only after being encouraged repeatedly; their love started to blossom. Some people were eager and willing. After signing, they even called others to sign. God and Buddha would never forsake anyone who possessed Buddha's heart or seeds of love; Master gave numerous chances to the same person. Her painstaking attention was very touching. Master took this opportunity to elevate our spiritual and wisdom levels. The younger generation were the most eager; and we can imagine that the future would be an extraordinary and superior era.

A Chance Of Giving Love To Others

Just after the sit-in appeal activity at the Legislative House, we received the direction from Master that evening to start the "Million peoples' signatures with love" campaign. The next day was Saturday. Fellow practitioners aimed at the huge crowd coming out of offices or schools at noon and staged the signature campaign at the favourable spots at Taipei Railway Station and in front of the university's entrance. Towards evening, more and more initiates joined in; so, the branch center immediately set up more points at department stores in the Eastern Area and the 'night market' area. Throughout the night, we were rushing to make propagation leaflets and white banners for the signature campaign. Those initiates, skillful in arts-and-crafts, helped to make posters and viewing boards. It was a busy, but happy night. Many citizens, who knew the reason of this signature campaign, happily signed their names with love. Students also came in groups and signed on the banners. Many parents also made use of this opportunity to educate their children on how to give tender love to others. Thanks for Master's love! She gave the Formosa people a chance to give out love. From the faces of the people signing their names, you could tell that they were very happy just like lovely, innocent children. All these were the outcome of Master's blessing.

Signature Campaign
Makes Us Spiritually Rich

Throughout the campaign, all the working staff had many chances to get to know the public. After putting down their signatures, some people eagerly invited their whole family to support the campaign. After signing, some praised our staff for working hard; and that is the best mental support we could hope to have.
After a whole day of hard work, we were physically exhausted, but we were spiritually enriched. On the spiritual path and seeking the Truth, we felt that we had grown up; Master and disciples grew closer together. Thank you, Master! You led us to seek the noble ideal and gave us many opportunities to learn.

A Protest in Suffering
To: Governor Chris Patten

Your Excellency,

We are group of legislators of Taiwan, the Republic of China. We have no comment to make on the Hong Kong Government's policy of repatriating the Vietnamese refugees which is based on the present situation and practical reasons. However, regarding the incident of the Hong Kong Government's use of violence to suppress the Vietnamese refugees in the Whitehead detention camp on April 7, 1994, we are seriously concerned.
We absolutely cannot agree with any government whose policy is made before having adequately assimilated the wishes of its people, and fails to understand the feelings, fears and helplessness of the refugees. We find it even harder to tolerate the barbaric treatment and inhumane means perpetrated on a group of unarmed, innocent elderly people, women and children, who were protesting peacefully.
At present, Governor Patten, in order for democracy to continue to develop in Hong Kong and to ensure it a prosperous future, you have, fearless of the provocation and response of Communist China, still insisted on the "Democratic Take Over Process". May we ask, then, if the violent and bloody suppression of the Vietnamese refugees, who merely desire freedom, is one of the items on the "Democratic Take Over" agenda? The spirit of democracy is based on respect of human rights. We sincerely hope that you will not neglect that democracy for all which you have always insisted upon.
We ask you please to handle the Vietnamese refugee problem with integrity and humanitarianism, and immediately cease any action that is against these precepts. Furthermore, we hope that the Hong Kong Government can continue negotiations with the Vietnamese Government regarding the refugees, and at the same time, provide the refugees with sufficient information, so that they will have no more doubts and fears, and will not feel a need to retaliate, in order that under such circumstances, an appropriate solution which respects the dignity of the refugees can be attained.
If this can be carried out successfully, we will be extremely grateful to you, and of course, based on the ideals of humanitarianism and freedom, we will also make our contribution towards this issue with our best efforts.

Sincerely yours

On the seventh day of this month, the “Whitehead Detention Camp” incident unfolded in Hong Kong. Because of the ordered forced repatriation of Vietnamese refugees by the end of 1995, the Government of Hong Kong used helicopters, coast guard ships, and armored vehicles to suppress the refugees, causing injuries to more than two hundred refugees.
On the thirtieth of this month, the refugees in Hong Kong planning to commit group suicide by setting fire to themselves, hanging themselves, and cutting open their own stomachs. Based on the following three points, we, the undersigned, do hereby request the Executive Yuan to coordinate efforts with the Mainland China Committee in Hong Kong and Macao, the Department of Foreign Affairs, and the Chinese Overseas Immigrants Association to show their concern and to provide the necessary aids:

  1. Fundamental human rights;
  2. The sharing of international responsibilities in the region of Asian Continent;
  3. A large proportion of refugees being Chinese immigrants and descendants.

Time is running out. We suggest that the Executive Yuan, through formal channels, make a declaration, requesting the Government of Hong Kong not to use inhuman means to deal with the refugee problem.
At the mean time, before the end of 1995, our government should continue to show our concerns and provide the needed resources to aid the refugees.

    Respectfully yours,

Note: More Legislators' signatures are being collected.

    Dear Supreme Master Ching Hai:

We learnt here in Taiwan about the shocking news that the Police and the Correctional Services Department in Hong Kong had joined forces in a ruthless raid on the Vietnamese refugees in Whitehead detention camp on April 7, 1994. We heard that they had dispatched helicopters, armored tanks and approximately three thousand anti-riot troopers in the raid and had caused over two hundred injuries, unfortunately. According to the media reports from Hong Kong, the brutality of the raid was comparable to living hell. This news shocked the world. And because of it, we fell very concerned and suspicious about the "Change of Policy" proposed by the Governor of Hong Kong, Mr. Chris Patten. We grieve for the humanitarianism and the civilization of the twentieth century. From the latest news on the evening of April 28, we heard that for the sake of love and hope, You and over one thousand disciples from all over the world have gathered in the fire tower in Hong Kong to meditate peacefully for the purpose of saving the refugees and praying for their freedom. This has called the attention and concern of the domestic journalist as well as those abroad. However, up to now, the Governor, Chris Patten still has not made any response yet.
We support Your call: "Refugees, be brave! Don't die!" We have decided to hold a peaceful meditation with You to pray for the suffering people, from 9a.m. sharp till 6p.m. on April 29 in the Legislative building. At the same time, we protest rigorously to Mr. Chris Patten as follows:

    1. The brutal raid was against the International Law of human rights.
    2. Hong Kong government, do not sacrifice innocent lives!
    3. Properly settle the Whitehead incident immediately, and stop all wrongful suppression.
    4. Peacefully resolve the problem or the twenty thousand refugees in whitehead detention camp before 1996.

      May peace be with You!

      Respectfully Yours,

The Legislators (joint signature still in process):
